Legislative Theatre

Occasionally the oppressions that are unearthed through Forum Theatre processes reveal that what needs to change is a law or a guideline or a procedure. Or perhaps what the process exposes is that a law is not being regulated correctly.

Legislative Theatre seeks to address issues of law by using forum theatre to rehearse the 'ideal law' and works with decision-makers and legislative bodies in what is called a 'metabolising cell' to draft the proposals acted out into proposed changes to the law or guidelines.

In 2001 I co-ordinated the first national Legislative Theatre project which was funded by the then Welsh Assembly. For a better understanding of the potential of Legislative Theatre and to help you decide whether it fits with your needs, below is a pdf of the final report for this project, which every Assembly Members received, and an introductory video to the project.

A longer documentary (15 minutes) is available to view here.

Personally, I believe Legislative Theatre could bring Co-production initiatives to an entirely new level of engagement and empowerment.
